Just tried on an updated app. As mentioned, the dots disappear after a few days. Hack/workaround: folders. Most of my apps are in folders, so, I rarely see the dots. My most used apps (i.e. Daily drivers) are on the home screen and therefore get used, so no lingering dots.

The black dot is normally always under the Finder icon no matter what. The black dot basically indicates that the application is running. It’s kind of like when you launch a program in Windows and it shows up on the taskbar with a grey line underneath it. On the Mac, most of the apps installed are listed on the Dock, so the only way to tell. Minor point - technically it's not restricted to 'not saved,' it generally means 'this window is in a state such that you do not want to close it right now.' For example: in Terminal.app if you have a process running that isn't the shell, that dot will appear, and if you try to close the window, it will warn you before actually closing. The 3 dots on the screen represent the number of launcher pages available. Swiping left or right to view them. The larger or highlighted dot means the current page you are on. Do you see an arrow icon at the top of your screen? Is it sometimes blue, sometimes hollow? And are you wondering what this icon means? That means that your phone is currently accessing your location. This icon can be in different format/colors. Different colors mean different things. This article explains what these different color arrow icons mean and how you can disable, if you want to do so.
In short, when you enable Location Services, a black or white-hollow arrow icon may appear indicating that your device is using Location Services (e.g., maps, Camera, weather apps, etc). When you enable your Location Services, you are letting your iOS device determine your location. Your iPhone or iPad uses GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile networks to obtain the most accurate location. When you disable this, it will be disabled for all apps.
Some apps may need this enabled as they may use this information to work correctly. For instance, you may set up location based reminders. Or Find My iPhone will not work if you disable Location Services. Without Location Services, you may not be able to use map apps. You may enable or disable this for certain apps. Note that Location Services may drain your battery.
Arrow icons
As I stated above, if you see this arrow icon, that means that your iPhone is accessing your location:
- A hollow arrow means that some apps (one or more than one) are actively using geofencing. This means that this will trigger an action when you go to a set location. For instance, you may set up a location based reminder (e.g., “set a reminder to call Bobby when I am home”) and when you are home, you will be notified. Obviously your iPhone will have to use Location Services.
- A solid (black) arrow means that your device is actively accessing yoru location. For instance, when you use a Map app, you will see this.

You can hide or show the Location Services icon easily. However you can only show or hide System Services Location Services. Note that this is not enabling or disabling Location Services. If you want to turn on and off this, please see the following section.
- On your iOS device, tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services
- Scroll down and tap System Services
- Scroll down and toggle off “Status Bar Icon”
How to turn off and on Location Services
You may want to disable this for various reasons. For instance, you may disable Location Services to extend your device’s battery life. Note that some apps may not work if you disable this. Here is how:
- Tap Settings
- Tap Privacy and Location Services
- And toggle off “Location Services”
You want to enable Location Services but you also want some apps not to access your location? You can also turn off and on Location Services for certain apps. Here is how:
- Tap Settings
- Tap Privacy and Location Services
- Find the app that you do not want it to access your location
- And then select “Never”. This means that this app will no longer use Location Services. There are other options that you may also choose. “While Using the App” means that the app will use Location Services when it is being used.
Location Services Not Working?
You may try to reset your Location Services by going to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Location & Privacy.

If you are working on Mac OS X 10.9.2 or newer, you may see a message about a software installer being damaged when you try to launch it. e.g. saying the software 'is damaged and can't be opened. You should eject the disk image' or that the software 'is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the Trash.'
Newer Mac systems include a security setting that can block the installation of apps downloaded from places other than the Mac App Store. To install QIAGEN software, you need to allow apps downloaded from identified developers as well the Mac App Store. Do this by adjusting your security settings:
- Go to System Preferences | Security & Privacy
- Click on the padlock icon at the lower-left corner to enable you to make changes.
- Choose 'App Store and identified developers'
We sign our software with a Developer ID from Apple. With the above setting chosen, you should be able to install our software. You will see a message warning you that the software has been downloaded from the internet, and asking if you wish to open it. This is expected, and you can proceed with installing the software.
Security settings affect your whole system. If you generally do not want to allow apps downloaded from anywhere except the App Store, then change the security settings back to the desired setting after you have finished installing your QIAGEN software.

If you wish to proceed with installation anyway
If you are certain you obtained the installer via official channels and thus wish to proceed with installation anyway, information on how to do so is below.
Mac OS X 10.9.2 to 10.11.x
In Mac OS X 10.9.2 and newer, there is a security setting that must be changed so that the downloaded installer can be opened. To change this setting on Mac 10.9.2 through 10.11.x, please take the following steps:
- Go to System Preferences | Security & Privacy
- Click on the padlock icon at the lower-left corner to to enable you to make changes.
- Select the option for Allow apps downloaded from: to Anywhere
- Close the security settings window
- Double click on the installer file again and click the Open button when prompted.
We recommend reverting your security settings after installation of the software is complete.
Mac OS Sierra 10.12.x
The premise is the same as shown for Mac OS 10.9.2 through 10.11.x except that the steps to enable the 'Anywhere' option are different.
If you view your security settings under System Preferences | Security & Privacy, you will see there is no Anywhere option.
To enable the 'Anywhere' option, run the following command in a terminal:
If you go back to System Preferences | Security & Privacy, you will see the Anywhere option enabled. Unlock the edit option by clicking on the padlock icon at the bottom of the window to change to Anywhere option.
At this point, you should be able to install the software.
